Precision measuring tools called vernier calipers are used to measure linear measurements including length, width, and thickness with accuracy. They are made up of a moving jaw assembly, a sliding vernier scale, and a main scale. A graduated ruler that is set throughout the length of the caliper body serves as the primary scale. For measuring linear distances, it usually contains marks in millimeters (mm) or inches (in). A secondary scale that moves parallel to the primary scale is called the vernier scale. It is divided into a number of sections that are marginally shorter than their corresponding sections on the main scale.
