An electronic device, or part of one, used to measure frequency is called a frequency counter. A periodic electronic signal's number of oscillation cycles or pulses per second is often measured by frequency counters. The majority of frequency counters function by adding up all of the occurrences that take place over a predetermined amount of time. The value in the counter is sent to a display and the counter is reset to zero after a predetermined amount of time known as the gate time (for instance, 1 second).
