A drill bit is a cutting instrument that can be used to make holes in a variety of materials, such as masonry, metal, plastic, and wood. Typically, it is made up of a cylindrical shaft with a pointy tip and spiral flutes running the length of it to help with chip evacuation and debris removal while drilling. There is a vast array of sizes, shapes, and materials for drill bits; each is appropriate for a particular material and application. High-speed steel (HSS), cobalt steel, carbide, or diamond-tipped can be used to make them, depending on the required level of precision and the hardness of the material to be drilled.
