Inspecting, Detecting & Testing Instruments

A device called a Brinell hardness tester is used to measure the hardness of materials, most commonly metals. It functions by placing a spherical indenter—typically composed of tungsten carbide or hardened steel—into the surface of the material to be tested and pressing it there for a predetermined period of time while subjected to a defined load. The diameter of the resulting indentation is measured, and the applied force and the indentation diameter are used to calculate the Brinell hardness number (BHN). This approach yields a representative average hardness value, which makes it especially helpful for materials with rough or uneven surfaces due to the large indentation size.
